The Response to The Business Informer Positive

The Northwest Georgia Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and Coosa Valley/North Georgia Council of Chief Elected Officials (CCEO) are proud to introduce The Business Informer.  The “Informer” is Region 1’s new quarterly publication targeting the business community.  The newsletter will contain current information such as area workforce needs and resources, laws, and training resources available in the region. The Business Informer also provides a medium for the WIB to publicize the services offered by the One-Stop System in Northwest Georgia. The inaugural issue of the newsletter was distributed last month. It was issued to businesses in the fifteen county area and response has been very positive. Hanes Announces Layoff of 105 Workers

Hoover Hanes Rubber Corporation of Haralson County announced plans to close the plant by mid-April resulting in the loss of approximately 105 jobs, but actually closed in mid-March with only 10-15 individuals still at the plant. Representatives from the Georgia Department of Labor, Department of Family and Children Services, Peachcare, Rapid Response, West Central Technical College, Coosa Valley Technical College, and Workforce Development met with the employees to review the services offered to dislocated workers through the Georgia Department of Labor and the Workforce Investment Act. Hoover Hanes, a division of RBX Industries, manufactures closed-cell foam materials and custom rubber compound. The West Georgia plant is one of three North American manufacturing facilities that will close.

Former Winston Man Speaks at Northwest Georgia’s Fourth Youth Summit

Dave Goerlitz, the former Winston Man model, was the opening speaker at the fourth Northwest Georgia Youth Summit. Mr Goerlitz is now an activist and spokesperson against tobacco use. In November 1988, Goerlitz took a historic stand against the tobacco industry: he publicly participated in the Great American Smoke-Out and condemned the tobacco industry's advertising, alleging that the sale of tobacco products targets young people of the world.

Goerlitz's book, "Before the Smoke Screen," is his personal story of how he became hooked on tobacco at age 13 and parlayed that addiction into a career as a lead model for Winston cigarettes during the 1980's. He became disillusioned with tobacco advertising, embarking on a ten-year-long, worldwide personal crusade to undo the damage his ads may have done in addicting 3,000 to 5,000 young people every week to tobacco products.

Earned Income Tax Credit Assistance

Help is now available on-line via the electronic toolkit for Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication (SPEC) and its partner organizations to assist in working with taxpayers who may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

The kit was developed for use in preparing for tax 2003 and subsequent tax years. It includes five sections designed to provide an overview on EITC, information on specific audiences, downloading tools that can be used by employees and partners, resource information, and statistical information relating to tax year 2002.

Keeping an Eye on the Future

Chattooga High School’s Youth Success Academy held “Job Shadow Day“ February 2, 2004. Thirty-seven students participated in the event, shadowing workers in jobs such as school teaching, county emergency medical services, and dentistry. The YSA staff matched students to jobs in their area of interest. Each student then wrote a report expressing likes and dislikes about their day. This was successful also in opening doors to students in summer jobs.

Northwest Georgia’s Fourth Youth Summit was held March 6, 2004 at the West Central Technical College. The summit was planned by area youth. Keynote speakers were Dave Goerlitz, the former “Winston Man”, and Dave Weber of Weber Associates. Weber’s “Rock Your Future” program :
• Encourages students to stay in school; • Introduces students to educational options after high school; • Inspires students to overcome their challenges, and • Motivates them toward achieving their goals.
