Bennett Named Chairman David Bennett , Director Region I Division of Rehabilitation Services, was recently selected as Chairman for the Region I Northwest Workforce Consortium. The Consortium is operator for the Northwest Georgia One-Stop System.Other members of the Consortium include: Everything is okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end. Goodwill Industries of Dalton Goodwill Industries of Chattanooga has become Dalton Department of Labor Career Center’s newest partner. Goodwill Industries, a non-profit agency, seeks and encourages people with disabilities and disadvantages to achieve their fullest capabilities and personal development through employment. The Dalton branch, under the leadership of Case Manager Scott Sangster, offers community-based work evaluation and adjustment as well as instruction in job readiness and job keeping skills. Scott can be reached at his new office in the Dalton Career Center at 706.370.7887 by those wishing to learn more about bringing people together through the power of work. Youth Corner Angela Garrett , Rome Housing Authority Lead GED Instructor, is especially proud of one of the youth who took part in the Summer Employment program. She reported to Coach Dwight Henderson who coordinated the program for the Rome Board of Education that Veronica Marshall received her GED on July 29, 2000. Veronica is currently enrolled at Coosa Valley Technical College where she plans to focus on early childhood education.While pursuing her studies, Veronica is employed in a part-time position at Rome Housing Authority’s (RHA) Wee Care Day Center as Lead Teacher in the three and over classroom. She is in the process of receiving CPR certification. Additionally, Veronica volunteers in RHA’s After School Tutorial Program and is mentoring a young RHA Learning-by-Learning participant. Veronica also acts as an RHA GED Ambassador, encouraging students who are currently enrolled in the GED program. Because of her numerous accomplishments and determination, Veronica is a candidate for the 2000-2001 RHA scholarship which is awarded annually to a resident/GED graduate for outstanding efforts. Rome Career Center Responding to the announced layoff of over 400 employees, the Rome Department of Labor Career Center opened a career resource center on-site at Galey & Lord in Rome. The resource center was opened to help employees find other positions, access training opportunities, etc. Many community resources were coordinated through the center. The Rome office also coordinated two job fairs prior to the layoff where local employers were invited to spend the afternoon recruiting, interviewing, and accepting applications for their businesses. In addition, the Career Center sponsored several "Lunch and Learns" that included resume preparation, job seeking skills, etc. As a result of the coordinated efforts, over 50 employees were able to find positions prior to the official layoff date.
