High School High Tech
156 students from Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin and Pickens counties participated in a HSHT College and Career Exploration Fair at the Dalton Convention Center in Dalton on March 8th, 2022. The Dalton Chamber of Commerce presented on the importance of soft skills when seeking employment. Dr. Stephani Womack, Director of Education Partnerships at the Greater Dalton Chamber and iWORKS Advisory Council Board Member, provided information to the student audience regarding “soft skills” to the attendees. Dr. Womack advised the students to focus on the main things that employers are looking for when interviewing:
o Eye contact. Make eye contact while holding a conversation with an employer.
o Verbal and written communication. Confidently introduce yourself, know your skills, speak clearly, and being able to communicate effectively through email.
o Consistency and dependability. Show up on time to work, do what you say you will do.
o Flexibility and problem solving. Employers want someone who will notice there is a problem but also someone who will come up with a variety of solutions before bringing the problem up to a supervisor.
o Positive attitude. Employers want people who are positive, engaging, and want to be there.
Employers brought tools of their trade so that students could have a “hands on” experience while learning about different job opportunities. Over 30 employers and post secondary institutions were present such as Amazon, Kroger, Lodge Cast Iron, Chic-Fil-A, Chattanooga Airport, Dept. of Natural Resources, Dalton Fire and Police Departments, Dalton State College, Chattahoochee Technical College, and Georgia Northwestern Technical College.
